Swimming with Sperm Whales
Encounters with the world's most charismatic whales.
Hey there!
Welcome to Adventure Fix, the newsletter that helps you discover extraordinary journeys and experiences across the globe.
Today, we’re heading to Dominica to spend time in the water with this Caribbean island’s most famous resident, the sperm whale.
While there are many other places you can spot these ocean giants, Dominica is the very best place for up-close encounters.
Swimming with Sperm Whales in Dominica
As you set out on a boat from the shores of Dominica, the anticipation builds.
The waters surrounding the island are home to over 200 resident sperm whales, so the chances of seeing one are good, the question is if these deep divers want to see humans.
The guides use hydrophones to listen for the distinct clicks and whistles of the whales to try to find their position.
When a pod of sperm whales is spotted, the boat approaches cautiously and respectfully.
Once near the whales, snorkelers carefully slip into the water.
Swimming alongside sperm whales offers a rare glimpse into their underwater world.
The experience of being so close to these magnificent creatures is both humbling and exhilarating.
You'll have a rare opportunity to see these gentle giants interact, communicate, and even play with one another.
It’s not just about seeing whales, it's about entering their world and witnessing their social behavior up close.
Sperm whales can be seen all year round, but the best time to see them is from February to August when the weather and water visibility are at their best.

How to Swim with Sperm Whales in Dominica
To swim with sperm whales in Dominica you’ll need to book a trip through a government-approved tour operator. These tour companies will provide you with the permits needed to get close to the whales.
There are a limited number of permits issued each year, so it’s best to book as early as possible.
These whales move quickly so there is a lot of swimming involved on these tours.
You should have snorkeling experience and be in good physical shape before heading to Dominica.
We hope your travels take you in this direction very soon.
Until then - keep exploring!
