Moheli Island in Comoros

A remote paradise island like no other.

Hey there!

Welcome to Adventure Fix, the newsletter that helps you discover extraordinary journeys and experiences across the globe.

Today, we’re heading to Moheli, Comoros, a secluded paradise for nature, beach, and ocean lovers.

The Comoros Archipelago is off Africa’s east coast, in the warm Indian Ocean waters of the Mozambique Channel.

Grande Comore is the largest island in the chain, but Moheli is hands down the most beautiful and peaceful.

While other islands in the Indian Ocean like Seychelles, Mauritius, and Maldives are overrun by tourists, Moheli is different.

There are no cruise ship terminals or mega resorts. Less than 700 tourists visit the island every year.

It’s truly a remote paradise with plenty to see and do.

Search for Mongoose Lemurs and Livingstone Bats in the trees.

Explore the mangrove forests by kayak.

Snorkel in the lagoon or scuba dive trip the reef for the chance to see manta rays.

Take a boat to small islands to check out the nesting sites of seabirds like masked boobies, noddy terns, and white-tailed tropicbirds.

Overnight on Itsamia Beach, one of the top places where sea turtles lay their eggs. Watch as they come to shore, dig pits, and lay their eggs. You might also see newly hatched turtles sticking their heads out above the sand for the first time.

Swimming with Humpbacks in Moheli

And we can’t forget the biggest drawl to this island, swimming with humpback whales.

Every year, from June to April about 1,000 whales migrate from Antarctica and visit the waters of the Comoros archipelago.

Snorkeling trips leave from Laka Lodge and head out to search for these whales. If you want to come face to face with these majestic beauties, put on your snorkel and mask and dive in.

If that’s not your thing, you can admire them from the surface when they come up for air, slap their tails, and do acrobatic jumps.

The best time to see and get into the waters with the humpbacks is the last week of August through the first week of October.

How to Visit Moheli

Reaching Moheli is an adventure on its own.

While the island does have a small airport, there are only five flights a week, and most of them get canceled. The only flights here are from neighboring Mayotte, Grande Comore, and Anjouan.

The staff at Laka Lodge can arrange flights for you.

The other option is to take a local ferry that leaves from the village of Chindini on Grande Comore. If the seas are calm, the ride takes about 2 hours.

We hope your travels take you in this direction very soon.

Until then - keep exploring!
