Searching for the Maned Wolf
Brazil's fox on stilts.
Hey explorer!
Welcome to Adventure Fix, the newsletter that helps you discover extraordinary journeys and experiences across the globe.
Also, a special shout out to the 36 new members who joined Summit, our community for adventure travelers.
Today, we are heading to Brazil to search for one of South America’s rarest animals, the maned wolf.
Despite its name and appearance, the maned wolf is not a fox, wolf, coyote, or jackal, but a distinct canid. It is the only species in the genus Chrysocyon (meaning “golden dog”).
While the maned wolf can be found in Paraguay, Argentina, Bolivia, and Brazil, the largest, most accessible populations can be found in Brazil.
Searching for the Maned Wolf
When thinking of wildlife in Brazil, perhaps thoughts of the Pantanal wetlands and Amazon rainforest come to mind.
However, vast expanses of this country are covered in grasslands, referred to as El Cerrado, which are home to some of the country’s most elusive wildlife, like this “fox on stilts”.
Its disproportionately long legs are adapted for navigating the tall grasses of its habitat.
The maned wolf gets its name from the black mane along their necks, which they can raise when threatened or displaying aggression.
Searching for the Maned Wolf
There are many places where tourists and naturalists can spot maned wolves in Brazil.
Chapada dos Guimaraes National Park, Emas National Park, Paranaiba Headwaters National Park, and Serra da Canastra National Park are some of the top locations.
In these parks, joining a tour led by an expert naturalist gives you the best chance of seeing this elusive animal in its natural habitat.
You’ll leave the lodge or camp in the early hours of the morning and travel through the park in an African-style safari truck. Scanning the grasslands, you’ll try to spot the maned wolf.
Other creatures that are commonly seen in the grasslands are giant anteaters, white-lipped peccaries, Brazilian tapirs, and possibly pumas.

How to See the Maned Wolf
Joining an organized tour led by a naturalist will give you the best chance of seeing maned wolves. Tours also take the stress out of organizing every detail as accommodation, meals, and transportation are usually covered.
Some good tour options are Royle Safaris and Nature Trek. Maned wolf safaris can also be organized through Posada Trijunção, a great choice if you prefer a more immersive experience.
When choosing a tour, consider what other wildlife you’d like to see. Some trips include trips to the Pantanal to spot jaguars.
The best months to see maned wolves are April through August. This time of the year isn’t too dry or too rainy, making it ideal for safaris.
We hope your travels take you in this direction very soon.
Until then - keep exploring!
