Winter Backpacking and Packrafting in Utah

Winter Backpacking and Packrafting in Utah

Photo: Eric Hansen

In this video, Eric Hansen @ Backpacking TV takes us along on a 3 day adventure in Utah’s canyon country. Along with his buddies he goes on a DIY packrafting/ backpacking journey. They hiked down into one canyon, passing massive granite arches then inflated their rafts, paddled down Lake Powell then finally hiked up and out of another canyon.

It was in the middle of winter and the lake levels were quite low, making for a cold and difficult trip.

Have you ever tried packrafting before? Head over to Summit and join the conversation.

Bikepacking can be tough. It requires packing prowess, camping skills and solid bike handling. Bikepacking the Silk Road Mountain Race is another thing entirely.

Covering 1,800 kilometres and over 30,000 meters of climbing the race route weaves its way through the towering Tian Shan mountains of Kyrgyzstan.

Carrying everything they need on their bikes, riders traverse forgotten soviet roads, dirt paths and single track as they brave the elements, explore the rugged landscape and experience the hospitality of the Kyrgyz people.

But how to do it? Watch this video and follow along as a group of adventurers take their shot at one of the world’s most difficult bike races.

Cramming into a tiny backpacking tent with your hiking buddies to play cards on a rainy afternoon is fun, right? Um yeah…fun. Well, at least it is for the first 10 minutes. After that it gets old pretty quick. Especially when somebody (of course not you) ate too much cheese.

What if there was a better way to group camp? Well there is – meet the Robens Chinook Ursa, an 8-person classic tipi style tent with a modern twist.

Whether you are looking for a great family tent, dreaming of a killer basecamp for your friends or creating a romantic million star glamping experience for your favorite hiking partner, the Chinook Ursa is up for the job.

There’s even a stovepipe port that allows you to cook inside. No more playing rock paper scissor to see who has to go outside to whip up dinner.Set up your dream basecamp. Check out this tipi tent.

Winter in the northern hemisphere is fast approaching. Exploring the backcountry in powder snow is an amazing experience but it comes with some risks, like being caught in an avalanche. The good news is avalanches rarely strike from above without warning. The vast majority are caused by the victim or someone in the victim’s party. So the more you learn about them, the better you can manage this risk.

This free online tutorial by Avalanche Canada shows you how to identify avalanche terrain, when they’re more likely to occur and how to understand the avalanche forecast and use it to plan your trips.
