DIVING

Diving SS President Coolidge

If you're into wreck diving, the SS President Coolidge in Vanuatu is about as epic as it gets. It was a swanky ocean liner back in the day before being turned into a WWII troopship.

In 1942, it hit friendly mines and sank right off the coast of Espiritu Santo. Now, it’s one of the most accessible deep wreck dives out there—you literally walk in from the shore.

Once you're down there, it's wild.

The ship’s massive, lying on its side between 20 and 72 meters deep, so there’s a dive for everyone, from open-water divers checking out the bow to tech divers exploring the engine room or deeper cargo holds.

You’ll see everything from jeeps and cannons to fancy chandeliers and “The Lady,” a famous porcelain statue.

And since it’s been down there for 80+ years, coral and marine life have made it home, so expect to see reef fish, eels, and maybe even a turtle cruising by.

NATURAL WONDERS

Ischigualasto

Ischigualasto, or the Valley of the Moon, is a wild, otherworldly landscape in San Juan Province, Argentina.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is famous for its surreal rock formations and some of the oldest dinosaur fossils ever discovered, dating back to the Triassic Period.

If you're into prehistoric history or dramatic desert scenery, this place is a must-see.

The landscape, shaped by millions of years of erosion, features striking formations like "The Mushroom" and "The Submarine."

While most visitors drive through the park, there are also hiking options, such as the Cerro Morado Trail, which leads to a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the park.

The hike is short but rewarding, offering a stunning perspective of the valley’s rugged terrain.

Thanks to its crystal-clear desert skies, Ischigualasto is often paired with Talampaya National Park.

STAYS

Greystoke Mahale

Photo: Greystoke Mahale

Greystoke Mahale isn’t your typical safari lodge—it’s an adventure straight out of a dream.

Found on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, with the misty Mahale Mountains rising behind it, this place is as wild and remote as it gets.

You can’t even drive here; the only way in is by boat.

The camp itself is all about laid-back luxury. The bandas (thatched bungalows) are made from old dhow boats, giving them a rustic, Robinson Crusoe feel, but with all the comforts you need.

Each one is open-fronted, so you wake up to nothing but lake views and the sound of waves lapping the shore.

The real reason people come here, though, is the chimps.

Mahale is home to one of the largest wild chimpanzee populations in Africa, and tracking them is an experience like no other.

You hike through the thick jungle, following the calls of the trackers, until suddenly you’re standing just a few feet away from a group of chimps—watching them play, groom each other, or just lounge around.
