Cuverville Island

Watch Antarctica’s most comical creature during mating season.

Hey there!

Welcome to Adventure Fix, the newsletter that helps you discover extraordinary journeys and experiences across the globe.

Today we’re setting our course for the pristine shores of Cuverville Island in Antarctica.

Cuverville Island in Antarctica

The island’s stark contrast of snow-clad cliffs against the dark volcanic rock is awe-inspiring.

Here you’ll find the home to the largest colony of Gentoo Penguins on the Antarctic Peninsula with over 7,000 breeding pairs.

Every year around late November, wildlife lovers come from all over to watch these comical creatures during the breeding season. This is when they make nests, fight over rocks, and slide into the water to go foraging.

Extra lucky visitors can also watch as the male penguins attempt to attract females by bringing them stones and making loud “trumpeting” calls up at the sky.

If the female likes what she sees, both partners point their bills towards the nest she has built.

How to Visit Cuverville Island

There are no airports, so the only way to reach Cuverville is by sea, either by an expedition ship or a private yacht.

The first option is the preferred choice for most visitors.

You can book a cabin on an expedition cruise for a chance to see the Gentoos of Cuverville Island for yourself.

We hope your travels take you in this direction very soon.

Until then - keep exploring!

P.S. Here’s a fun fact for ya. That’s not blood in the picture above, it’s penguin poo. When they eat krill, it comes out pink. When they fish, it’s white.

An even cooler fact is that the pink color allows penguin colonies to be seen from space.
