The Cave of Hanging Snakes
Seeing as Halloween is around the corner, today, we’re facing our fears of bats, snakes, and confined spaces and heading to a place that has all three - Katemó Caves a.k.a the Cave of Hanging Snakes.
Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is known for its party and all-inclusive resort scene but for nature and adventure lovers, there is plenty to explore if you know where to look.
Southwest of Tulum, near the quiet Mayan town of Kantemó you’ll find a natural wonder that sounds like something out of an Indian Jones movie.
Each day at dusk, 150 bats pour out of this cave every minute and a rare species of snake lurks in the crevices, silently waiting for its moment to strike.
These skilled hunters dangle down and with calculated precision, pluck their dinner right out of the air with their mouths.
All this is done in complete darkness. A true display of evolutionary mastery.
About 300 brave souls enter this cave every year hoping to get a glimpse of this unusual behavior.

Can you Go Independently?
The short answer is no. To access the cave, you’ll need to go with a guide who can show you the way and make sure you keep a safe distance away from the snakes.
